As they come available, scholarship opportunities are announced during the daily announcement time. Mrs. Daniel has set up a table in the library to display college information as it is made available. The library computers are also available for searches concerning college information and scholarship opportunity. Students are welcome to come by Mrs.Daniel's office between classes or before or after school. Mrs. Daniel will be in the library as needed to work with students on college applications during their regularly scheduled government or economics class. Mr. Ward will allow senior students to come to Mrs. Daniel's office during his class when time permits.

Many local organizations, churches, civic clubs, banks, and credit
unions offer scholarships to worthy graduates. These will be made
available to all interested students in Spring 2007. Most of the
committees will accept the standard RHS scholarship application
available on the computers in the high school library. Mrs.
Cockrum will make all these opportunities available to the students as
the organizations inform the school about their application deadlines.
Most local scholarships can be applied for using the Rusk High School Scholarship Application which is available in paper form from Mrs. Cockrum or is accessible and reproducible on the RHS library computers. Using the form on the library computer allows the student to complete the application one time and copy it for every scholarship which they choose to apply. The local scholarship application deadline will be announced in January. NO applications are being accepted at this time.
NEW LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY!
A new scholarship, in honor of Collin Carroll, RHS Class of 2003, has been established for the graduates of the class of 2008. Collin is remembered here in Rusk as an all-around student, involved in athletics- in football and pole vaulting-winning recognition in both areas, Student Council officer, Class president, and Top Ten graduate. This scholarship will be available using the local scholarship application and will require a letter of recommendation from the student's pastor or youth leader. The committee will also take into consideration academic success, extra-curricular involvement and character .

The Texas Democratic Women of Cherokee County are once again offering three $500 scholarships to young women who submit an essay on the topic "What should the Texas state government do to deal with the increasing number of the children of the working poor who are unable to afford health care?" The 300-400 word, essay must be in the Jacksonville office by Monday, April 28. See Mrs. Daniel for other details.
The Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Agency is offering a $500.00 scholarship to an area senior. The application is made in the form of a letter requesting them to consider you for their scholarship. IT must include the name of the scthe school and career choice for college; high school grades (include a transcript) family income information; awards received in high school and community; a letter of recommendation from a teacher or principal and any other information you feel is needed for the committee's consideration. If must be received in the lodge office no later than May 5, 2008. If any of the above information is omitted your application will not be considered.
The Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) provides $1,000 scholarships for students planning to pursue a teaching career in Bilingual Education. Application and eligibilty rules are available at the TABE website www.TABE.org Applications are due on or before March 15, 2008.
The Cherokee County Farm Bureau has sent an information packet with all the scholarships associated with the Texas Farm Bureau. ALL applications are available on the Texas Farm Bureau website: www.txfb.org . The Marilyn C. Sweeney Scholarship in conjunction with the Texas Society of the Order of the Confederate Rose has made available the application for a $1,000.00 scholarship. The applciation includes two letters of recommendation, a biographical letter, and a two page, typed essay on the life of Lt. Colonel John Pelham. The entire application must be postmarked on or before May 1, 2008. See Mrs. Daniel for the application.
The University of Houston in association with the Frontier Fiesta Association is offering a graduating senior an opportunity for a $6,000 scholarship for academic achievement and community involvement. Please see Mrs. Daniel before February 29 if you are interested in applying.
Texas State Technical College, Marshall is offering scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000 which are merit-based, allowing students to be recognized for their hard work throughout high school. Deadline for submitting this application if April 1, 2008. Pelase see Mrs. Daniel for the form.
East Texas Baptist University is offering 4-year scholarships to students pursuing a degree in math, chemistry or teacher certification with emphasis in math or physical science. Any student intersted should see Mrs. Daniel for details or visit the www.ETBU.edu website.
Cherokee County Retired School Personnel will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior from one of the five Cherokee County high schools who is entering the field of education. If this applies to you, see Mrs. Daniel for an application which is due April 15, 2008.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers, Inc. is
awarding a scholarship to a senior who will officially enroll at a
four-year university with a major in petroleum, chemical , or
mechanical engineering. This is a $500.00 dollar per semester
scholarship for the freshmen year and $1,000.00 per semester for the
remaining 3 years, for a total of $7,000.00. Please see Mrs.

Heritage Land Bank is offering four $2,500.00 scholarships to seniors interested in pursuing an agriculture-related field of study. The application includes an essay on "Why You wish to Pursue a Career in the Field of Agriculture".
The Tyler Jr. College Scholarship application is due by March 1, 2008. This application is necessary for everyone enrolling in TJC for the Fall semester 2008. You must complete this application to be considered for the TJC/Citizen's 1st Bank Scholarship awarded to 4 Rusk High School seniors in the amount of $4,000 per student. This application is downloadable from the tjc.edu website (go to scholarships) or from Mrs. Daniel.
Austin Bank Scholarship- Application available in Mrs. Daniel's office. It is due February 29, 2008. It includes a two-page typed essay and three character reference letters. There will be one $2,500.00 award and fourteen $500.00 awards given to area high school seniors.
The Cherokee County Electric Cooperative Association's annual scholarship application is now available in Mrs. Daniel's office. The Cooperative is awarding 25 $1000 scholarships this year to students in the Rusk and Chapel Hill service area. All applications are due in the Rusk office no later than 5:00 P.M. on February 28, 2008. Recipients will be notified no later than April 30, 2008. You must be the child of a person who is an active member of the Cherokee Electric Cooperative, in good standing, and currently receiving electric service from Cherokee County Electric Cooperative.
The East Texas Communities Foundation offers a variety of scholarships for students in the East Texas area - especially to Tyler Jr. College. Please go to the website - etcf.org for all the available scholarships. some of those include the Citizen's 1st Bank State Employee's Children's Scholarship (if your parent or guardian is an employee of the Rusk State Hospital or the Texas Department of Corrections), the Jacqueline M. The Eastex Telephone Co-op., Inc. will award thirty $3,000.00 scholarships to area graduating high school seniors whose household receives current telephone service from their company, Eastex Telephone Exchange. (If you have a 743 or 795 prefix to your telephone number -check your telephone bill) The application and its requirements are available in Mrs. Daniel's office. The application MUST be postmarked by March 1, 2008. Two letters of reference are required.
The East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is proud to offer its annual scholarship of $500. The scholarship application and essay must be submitted by March 3, 2008. See Mrs. Daniel for the application and essay topic.
The Texas Telephone Association Foundation will award 5 Four-year scholarships, in the amount of $1500 per year to seniors entering college this fall. Special consideration will be given to student who will be pursuing a college degree in fields of study of particular interest to telecommunications (such as math, business, engineering, and computer science) Courses of study in high school, extra-curricular activities and demonstrated leadership will also be considered, as well as financial need. A college-acceptance letter is required. See Mrs. Daniel for the application which is due March 14, 2008.
Ozarka is proud to announce the 2008 "Every Drop Counts" Earth Science Scholarship. Two students in the state of Texas will receive $10,000.00 scholarships. The scholarship is intended for students pursuing degrees at a four-year college in the field of earth/environmental science-such as Geology, environmental science, environmental law, environmental education, forestry, oceanography, and ecology. See Mrs. Daniel for the application which includes an essay and must be postmarked by March 31,2008.
The Texas Department of Transportation is accepting application to the Conditional Grant Program for Fall 2008. The grant provides tuition assistant to seniors and college students pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, computer science, and management information or computer information systems. Students will receive a maximum of $3,000 each semester or $6.000 per academic year. For program rules, requirements, and the application packet access the website at www.txcot.gov/careers.
The Texas Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the 5th annual Don't Mess With Texas Scholarship Program
sponsored by the Raytheon company. The program recognizes the
achievements of Texas high School seniors who help promote litter
prevention in their communities.
Applicants may (1) write an essay about a. how they helped solve a
litter problem in their community ($3,000 grand prize and a $1,000
second-place prize or (2) what their ideas are to assist Don't Mess With
Texas in its effort to put a "Litterbug in Every Car" (a $1,000
scholarship will be awarded.) Students who want to be considered
for all scholarships may submit two essays on separate sheets of paper.
An official Scholarship form and certification must accompany the
essays. You may pick those up from Mrs. Daniel. All
documents must be postmarked no later than April 4, 2008.
The East Texas Baylor Club awards two 4-year partial scholarships to entering freshmen at Baylor University ($800 per semester for eight semesters) The scholarship is based on academic achievement, community and church service, and financial need. The deadline is February 28, 2008. See Mrs. Daniel for a copy of the application.
Any senior interested in attending Sam Houston State University and pursuing a Business degree should see Mrs. Daniel concerning a scholarship opportunity.
The Dallas Scottish Rite Library and Museum Scholarship application is now available in Mrs. Daniel's office. The scholarship is $1,000.00, payable in two installments of $500 each for the first two semesters the student is enrolled in college. The application has a March 1 deadline.
Audry Owens Memorial Scholarship Fund Several $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded. This application if for a senior student interested in pursuing a career associated with agriculture. A hand-written essay on "My interest in agriculture, and how winning the Audry Owens Memorial Agricultural will impact the achievement of my educational and career goals." that must not exceed two pages. Other requirements are available on the application in Mrs. Daniel's or Mr. Jason Wilcox's office. Deadline for receipt of application is March 15, 2008.
Rusk Colored High School/ G.W. Bradford Alumni Association, Dallas Chapter is the J. W. Carter Legacy Scholarship this year. Applicants must be a descendant of a former student of Rusk Colored School or G.W. Bradford High School and currently attending Rusk High School. An single page essay describing the student's descendant is required. Two $1,000.00 scholarships will be award. Get other application details and requirements in Mrs. Daniel's office.

The East Texas State Fair is proud to announce its annual scholarship program. Up to ten $3,000.00 scholarships will be granted to graduating seniors who plan to attend Tyler Jr. College. The Stewart Regional Blood Center is now accepting application for its 2007-2008 Stewart Scholars scholarship. The deadline for applying is February 13, 2008. (must be postmarked this day) All interested applicants must complete a scholarship application (available at www.stewartblood.org.) and include an essay on a blood-related topic. The topic is: How do blood donations impact your community, and in what ways can you make a difference?
The 2008-2009 Tyler Jr. College Scholarship Application is available. A completed application for those planning to attend Tyler Jr. College must include: the completed and signed application form, a one-page personal statement, a counselor's verification form, a letter of personal recommendation, official high school transcript and any college transcript. This application is valid for all types of scholarships. However, performance based scholarships (inc. cheer, band, sports, choir, etc.) will require a try-out or audition.

The Tyler Music Coterie is pleased to announce that auditions for the Hambrick/Mueller "Young Musician of the Year" Scholarship award for 2008 will be held on March 1, 2008 at the Marvin United Methodist Chapel in Tyler. USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships will award up to 3.2 million in new.renewable scholarships demonstrating financial need. Up to 50% of the scholarships will be targeted to students who, in addition to demonstrating financial need, are members of an ethnic-minority group or are physically disabled. Texas Restaurant Association is sponsoring a scholarship worth $5000 for a student attending a 4-year university, culinary arts academy and a $2000 scholarship for a student attending a 2-year community college and majoring in a degreed food service or hospitality program. Mensa Essay Contest
The Mensa Foundation and East Texas Mensa has announced its 2007-2008 Scholarship Essay Contest. Winners will receive awards of $300 to $1000 based on an essay of 550 words or LESS describing their academic or career goals. Essays must be postmarked by January 15, 2008 to be accepted. The application, available from Ms. Daniel, must also be completed and returned with the essay.
Texas Student Housing Scholarship Program-2007-08
The Texas Student Housing Authority is offering a $2500 per year scholarship (renewable up to 4 years for a maximum value of $10,000.) to students accepted in colleges located in Austin, College Station, Denton, or San Marcos, Texas.
