RUSK ISD Notice of Destruction of Special Education Records
Special education records collected by Rusk Independent School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or provision of special education services must be maintained in accordance with state and federal law for a period of seven (7) years after special education services have ended for the student.
Special education services end when a student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, completes his or her educational program at age 22, or withdraws/moves from the district.
This notice is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Rusk Independent School District’s intent to destroy the special education records of students who received special education services during or prior to the 2018–2019 and 2019–2020 school years. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible adult student notifies the district otherwise.
Parents/guardians or eligible adult students may request a copy of the records in writing by September 30, 2026. Requests may be mailed or delivered in person to:
Rusk ISD Special Education Department
203 East 7th Street
Rusk, Texas 75785
A valid government-issued photo ID must be provided to verify the requestor’s identity and legal right to access the records.
If no response is received from the student, parent, or guardian regarding this public notice, the district will assume consent to destroy the student’s special education records.
For additional information or assistance in understanding this notice, please contact Brittany Welch at 903-683-4466.
Why we’re making this change
Remind has been acquired by ParentSquare and will be discontinued after June 30. To ensure uninterrupted communication with our families, Rusk ISD is beginning the transition to ParentSquare.
What to expect during the transition
As we begin migrating our communication systems, you may receive notifications, messages, or test communications from ParentSquare. These messages are part of the setup and migration process.
In the coming days, we will send additional information with step-by-step instructions for downloading the ParentSquare app, setting up your account, and getting connected.
We appreciate your patience during this transition and look forward to using ParentSquare to strengthen communication between our schools and families.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our local law enforcement agencies, as well as our Rusk ISD staff, students, and community members for their cooperation, patience, and commitment to safety throughout this situation.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we appreciate everyone’s support in helping us maintain a secure learning environment.
Thank you again for your understanding and partnership.

Rusk ISD is aware of reports of potential threats in the surrounding areas. Please know that we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students and staff. At this time, there have been no direct threats made toward Rusk ISD. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with local authorities as needed. The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. We will keep you informed of any updates if needed. Thank you for your continued support.
